Yesterday, March 2nd, was Dr. Suess’ 108 birthday! My son’s kindergarten class did something special to celebrate. My daughter’s 3rd class did not – as they are preparing for testing next week (always about the test!). I wonder if there is another author that will always have a day to celebrate. Was there another author like Dr. Suess – whose work has touched so many children’s and adult’s lives?
Last night, my children chose to read Dr. Suess books, The Lorax and Daisy Head Mayzie. They are both long books. We couldn’t decide on just one; so I read The Lorax to my son, and my daughter went upstairs to her room with her dad and read Daisy Head Mayzie to him. I don’t think I need to tell you how wonderful Dr. Suess books are – even the illustrations. They are a pleasure to read – even if they are a little long. I hope that my grandchildren will still be celebrating Dr. Suess’ birthday! He was so important in so many children’s lives.
Just a note – Daisy Head Mayzie was discovered in Dr. Suess’ notes after he passed away and was published posthumously.
Last year we went to Springfield, MA and stopped off at the Dr. Suess sculpture garden. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
Happy Birthday!
